I'm a Seattle-based writer, playwright and teacher. Also the founder of The Diwaan Project, a cultural institute geared toward public education on global affairs. I teach a course called "From Burqas to Catwalks: Perspectives on Women and Islam" at the University of Washington. This blog features news commentaries and observations from my travels in Pakistan. I have also traveled extensively in the Middle East and published a book about my adventures in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. More info on my website. The word "Diwaan" has roots in Arabic, Persian and Urdu. It can be thought of as a gathering place for people to discuss ideas and engage in lively debates. So consider this a virtual web salon where you'll find much to debate and maybe even to laugh about. I enjoy using humor as a way to reach out to hearts and minds. Some day, I'd like to walk in the footsteps of David Sedaris. Turning around stereotypes is my specialty. This assortment of musings is a case in point. Do read on.
